Rosa Ruiz Bazan grinds a pile of tiny red cactus mites into a deep burgundy powder creating a natural dye. She dumps the fine dust into a boiling cauldron filled with spun wool. In her outdoor workshop family members work at large wooden looms. The Ruiz Bazan family has been hand-weaving richly colored carpets since the 16th century. Up until a year ago, the family business was modest. Then a company called Novica.com asked them to sell their rugs in a new market called the World Wide Web.
Using a computer donated by Novica.com, they can see which carpets are selling quickly and make more. And they don't have to travel from the hinterlands to Oaxaca City in order to make a sale. Since joining Novica, the family reports they have increased their staff by 50 percent. They are now in a position to consider giving a raise to their weavers.
Another artist works in a community in Peru where most of the artists had gone to work in copper mines. And now, because of his success with Novica.com, he's been able to hire many of his family members and neighbors back from the mines and into the weaving business. They are now able to do what for many generations their family has done before, and that is to weave
incredible tapestries.
