Mohapatra Completes Fall 2007 J Mendel Collection for the Bryant Park Fashion Shows on March 8th
The Fall 2007 collection has, yet again, a very fresh and young spirit. Following on last seasons critically acclaimed Spring 2007 J Mendel show in the tents at Bryant Park, Bibhu Mohapatra and Gilles Mendel are putting the finishing touches on the fall 2007 collection.
With his usual creative spirit and passion Bibhu Mohapatra is using extravagant materials; from gold washed canvases to fine minks, fine silk mousselines and silk gazaars. The looks have become more tailored and classic.
The J. Mendel label stands for high style, integrity of design and clothes that are made with classic couture techniques. This hip couture house is turning up the heat under the direction of Bibhu Mohapatra.
Mohapatra and his team, in a uniquely extravagant way, create many pieces from which the final looks for the runway are selected. "Neither Gilles nor Bibhu is shy about cutting a look that might have required many hundreds of hours to create in order to maintain the look and the context envisioned for the core of the collection." After seven years with the label, Bibhu still relies on the savvy eye of Gilles Mendel for conceptual guidance, but has complete freedom to create from his sole and follow his instincts. This is the sole of a brilliant young designer. Only his team of Hindu gods know what his future has in hold.
Bibhu has just completed one of his first solo projects, an enchanting, understated yet wildly luxurious wedding gown for Allison Beard, a Saddle Bred equestrian World Champion. The wedding will be in Tampa on March 17th this year.
While at J. Mendel, Mohapatra has designed clothes for Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julian Moore, Eve, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Salma Hayak, Mandy Moore, Gwen Stefani and Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson, Britney Spears, Jessica Lange, Melania Trump, Halle Berry, Julian Moore, Kate Blanchett, Terry Hatcher, Laura Linney, The line has been featured in every major fashion magazine, Vogue, Harpers, Elle, In style, Nirali Magazine, WWD.
"For spring (2007), he was thinking more geometrically. Overlapping circles were a recurring motif on everything from a chocolate patent-leather coat to his new suit: a short-sleeve jacket with volume below the bust worn with a pleated, full skirt. And to drive home the point that he can do more than evening, he even tried his hand at denim. A stiff, midnight blue, it was sliced and chevroned like his furs, and oozed uptown cool."
